Consultation on amendments to the Architects Registration Board’s
Procedures for Prescribed Examination
Open date: 26 August 2011
Closing date: 5pm on Friday 18 November 2011
Introduction
The Architects Registration Board was established by Parliament in 1997 to regulate the architects’ profession in the UK. We are an independent public interest body, and our work in regulating architects ensures that good standards within the profession are consistently maintained for the benefit of the public and architects alike.
Background to consultation
The Architects Registration Board has agreed to hold a consultation exercise following its decision to amend the Examination Procedures.
The examination process judges individual candidates against the criteria which are held in common with schools of architecture and the RIBA. The criteria set out the minimum levels of knowledge, understanding and skills that students of architecture must acquire at key stages in the process of qualifying as an architect. As new criteria are about to be applied to qualifications, equivalent changes must be made to the Prescribed Examination. Certain sections of the current Examination Procedures are not compatible with the new criteria and so amendments have been made to ensure compatibility. The Board also agreed to some enhancements to the Prescribed Examination and these are also reflected in the amendments to the Examination Procedures. The consultation will comply with ARB’s code of practice for consultation exercises
.
Purpose of consultation
Before formalising the proposals, it is important that we have as wide a range of views as possible. This input will assist the Board in its final consideration of the revised scheme before it is implemented. We would therefore appreciate any views or comments you might have on the proposed changes.
The proposals are contained in the consultation response form, and the existing proposals can be found in the document Prescribed Examination Procedures
.
