Introduction
The Architects Registration Board (ARB) was established by The Architects Act 1997 and is the statutory regulator for the architects’ profession in the UK (replacing the previous regulatory body, ARCUK, the Architects Registration Council of the UK). As a regulator ARB has a dual role, both to protect the consumer and to safeguard the reputation of architects including setting standards of competence for the profession.
Through its university liaison programme, ARB aims to build a constructive relationship with students and academics in UK schools of architecture which includes running sessions for students about ARB.
This handbook complements those sessions and contains information on:
- the background to ARB, its Board, staff and remit
- how to register with ARB and routes to registration
- prescription of qualifications
- regulation of the title ‘architect’
- investigation of complaints
- UK and EU legislation
Further information can be found on our main website (www.arb.org.uk) and hard copies of the printed documents and forms in the handbook are available from ARB on request.
Copies of this handbook have been sent to all schools of architecture offering prescribed qualifications and these will be updated from time to time. You can also keep up to date with developments and the work we are doing by reading ARB’s Education Newsletter which is available on our main website and emailed each term to heads of school and professional studies advisers for distribution within their departments. We would welcome feedback on how useful you find this handbook and whether there is any additional information that you would like to see included. You can tell us what you think either by emailing or writing to us or telling us when we make one of our visits to your school.
