Prior to September 2003 – Visiting Board process leading to prescription

Prior to September 2003, ARB appointed representatives to and received reports from Visiting Boards. These Boards visited schools of architecture, usually every five years, to assess the quality of education and standard of work. ARB would consider these reports before deciding whether or not a qualification should be prescribed or whether prescription should be renewed – for more information see the Procedures for Validation.

From September 2003 – Documentary applications for prescription

In September 2003 ARB introduced a new process for prescribing qualifications. This changed the way in which ARB decides whether a qualification should be prescribed and added to the list. The revised process involves institutions submitting documentary applications to ARB, which contain material on the quality and standards of their qualifications. From September 2003, ARB now publishes details of the Board's decisions and the reasons for its decisions in relation to prescription. These reasons are linked to the level of confidence the Board has in respect of each qualification meeting its objectives. These are outlined in Sections 2.5.1 and 2.5.2 of the Board's Procedures for the Prescription of Qualifications.
