Education --> Schools of Architecture offering prescribed qualifications

General Information

Established by an Act of Parliament in 1997, the Architects Registration Board (ARB) is the body charged with the task of maintaining the UK Register of Architects.

In order for anyone in the UK to practice using the title "architect," they must be registered with AR B . In order to do so, they must have passed through a recognised series of steps in their education and training. This normally comprises the following steps:

There are currently 39 different institutions/bodies offering prescribed courses by the ARB in the United Kingdom .

ARB has recently altered the method by which it prescribes qualifications and decides whether a qualification should be added or should remain on the list of prescribed qualifications. Before September 2003, ARB, alongside the RIBA, was involved in visiting institutions and reviewing qualifications. Following a review of the procedures by which these visits were carried out, ARB approved and began operating a new process for prescribing qualifications. ARB no longer visits institutions. ARB now invites institutions to make documentary submissions for the purposes of prescribing qualifications.

Details of the qualifications on offer at each institution and the key details of the Board's decisions in relation to each qualification are available on the website. These can be found by clicking on the relevant area of the map where the institution is based, and then on the name of the institution itself. Clicking on the qualifications offered by that institution will bring up the Board decisions.
