Nabila Zulfiqar has been elected as the new Chair of the Architects Registration Board. The Chair’s role involves leading the Board to deliver on ARB’s statutory remit in accordance with the principles of good governance. The election follows the departure of Peter Coe, who having been elected as Chair in July 2016, stepped down from the role in February. Peter stepped down at this point in order to facilitate a smooth transition to a new Chair due to the fact that his eight year tenure as a Board Member will come to an end on 31 March 2017.
Nabila Zulfiqar has served as a lay Board Member with the ARB since April 2013 including serving as Chair of ARB’s Investigations Oversight Committee. She is a solicitor with an LLB (Hons) in Business Law. Nabila is a regulatory specialist, with experience of governance and regulation of the legal profession, architects, teachers, healthcare scientists and the press. Nabila works as Chief Adjudicator at the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA); the regulator of legal services in England and Wales. Prior to her time at the SRA, Nabila was Council Solicitor at the General Teaching Council for England, advising on all legal matters and managing the legal team responsible for overseeing the professional conduct process. Between 2005 and 2008, Nabila was Principal Solicitor and Head of Service in the Legal Department of Birmingham City Council. Additionally, Nabila is a national chair of the Anti-Discrimination Panel for the Football Association and she was recently appointed to the Independent Press Standards Organisation Readers Panel. Previously, she was a member of the Academy for Healthcare Science Regulation Council.
Nabila Zulfiqar said, ‘I am delighted to have been elected Chair of the Architects Registration Board. I would like to thank my colleagues on the Board and all those who work for ARB for the support they have shown me. It is a very interesting time to be involved in the work of the regulator of architects and I will be drawing on the skills and experience of my colleagues as we await the outcome of the government’s periodic review. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the previous Chair, Peter Coe, whose insight and positive manner have been of great benefit to ARB over the duration of his eight year tenure.’
Richard Parnaby, Vice Chair, said, ‘Congratulations to Nabila on her appointment as Chair. I look forward to supporting Nabila and the rest of the Board team as we continue to oversee the organisation, ensuring that it delivers on its regulatory remit.’
Karen Holmes, Registrar and Chief Executive, said, ‘I would like to welcome Nabila to the role of Chair of the Architects Registration Board. Nabila’s extensive experience of regulation as well as her time working as a lay Board Member mean that she is very well placed to take on this role. She is committed to effective regulation in the public interest and is well respected by the Board and all those who work for ARB.’
