John is a chartered architect and graduate from the Birmingham School of Architecture with over 35 years’ experience, having roots in both academia and commercial private practice. Following an initial appointment as a Research Fellow within York University Design Unit at the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies, his research findings in conservation and residential development evolved with a series of live projects which were progressed in his subsequent role as a partner and director within private practice.
Direct links with the profession have been maintained with the RIBA at branch, regional and national levels, with committee membership of education panels and former chair of the RIBA Professional Education Steering Group.
Currently he is Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham as Director of Professional Studies and Part 3, but also actively involved at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels with studio-led live projects to design, fund-raise and construct schools in rural South Africa.
Previous and current appointments as external examiner or professional examiner are held within Schools of Architecture at Leeds, Lincoln, Westminster, Cardiff, UWE and Malaga. He is also chairman of trustees for a pioneering aviation museum, and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
