Paul Clarke

Biography

Paul Clarke is Professor of Architecture and Subject Lead at the Belfast School of Architecture and Built Environment at Ulster University, where he is a member of the Research Institute of BSABE. He is an architect, writer and filmmaker.  He has many years of practice experience working with award winning practices. He is currently supervising a number of PhDs on the relationship between film and architecture, and the role of drawing in contemporary critical practice.

Born in Glasgow his written and architectural work has been widely published.  With Phaidon he collaborated on the Architecture and Detail series on the masterworks of Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Glasgow School of Art and The Hill House which were completed during the period he was teaching at the Mackintosh School of Architecture. He was part of an expert advisory panel working within the architect’s team restoring the Glasgow School of Art. He has drawings held in various collections including the Royal Scottish Academy and the Glasgow School of Art . He was the curator of a touring exhibition and research project on architect’s sketchbooks called The Secret Laboratory and he has directed and produced the film Drawing on Life which was a full length documentary film on drawing which has been screened internationally at many film festivals. His recent book edited with Peter Maybury, called Notations, is a folio collection exploring different practices and approaches to architectural drawing and sketchbooks including unpublished work by such architects as O’Donnell + Tuomey and Grafton Architects.
