Suzanne McCarthy

Suzanne McCarthy held several senior positions during her executive career including   Immigration Services Commissioner and Chief Executive of both the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.  During her central Whitehall career she worked at both HM Treasury and the Home Office.  At the latter she served as Private Secretary to two Home Secretaries.

Suzanne is Chairman of Depaul UK, a charity concerned with youth homelessness, and a member of the Board of Depaul International.  She was appointed the first independent chair of the Institute of Fundraising’s Standards Committee and is now a member of the new Fundraising Regulator’s Board.  She co-founded and was elected the first Chairman of a pan European body, the European Forum of Deposit Insurers.  In addition, she chaired the General Chiropractic Council and both the University of London’s Audit and Risk Assurance Committee and the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital’s Audit Committee as well as various working groups such as the General Medical Council’s group on Continuing Professional Development. She is currently a member of several boards including the Advertising Standards Authority and the University of London, the RICS UK and Ireland Regulatory Board.  In addition, she serves as the Independent Appointed Person for the Greater London Authority, as Independent Chair of the Southwark and Lambeth Strategic Partnership, Joint Audit Panel Chair for the Mayor’s Office of Policing and Crime and the Metropolitan Police Service and Chair of the Advisory Committee of Vopulus, a private company. Her previous Board appointments include the RIBA and the General Medical Council.

Before entering the public sector, Suzanne worked as a solicitor in private practice and was a lecturer in Law at the University of Manchester.  Suzanne studied both in America and the UK, and holds an LL.M. degree from the University of Cambridge.
