ARB RIBA statement on Architectural Education (04/02/2002)
There is no crisis in architectural education, despite recent ill-informed speculation.
The ARB and the RIBA are working co-operatively on a single new criteria document, taking into account the comments already made by SCHOSA on both parties’ draft criteria. The task is complex as it defines, legally, an architect for the first part of the 21st century and sets out the future knowledge base of the profession. Nevertheless, both parties are optimistic that a single criteria set can be agreed.
Once agreed and approved by the ARB Board and the RIBA Council the new criteria will be introduced in an orderly way. Meanwhile, the existing criteria stand.
If schools wish their graduates to be able to register as architects and join the RIBA they must opt to be validated by a procedure recognised by ARB and the RIBA. They may choose also to be validated by other existing or new agencies, but this will not affect the Registration Board’s or the Institute’s considerations.
We look forward to a fruitful relationship with SCHOSA, in which the schools’ interests are clearly reflected.
