Prescription Decisions by the ARB Board (08/10/2002)

In response to recent press comment, ARB is as concerned as anybody at the effect on students of any decision taken to remove prescription from a course leading ultimately to registration.

Unfortunately, there is no right time when a Board decision to remove prescription will not affect students. For example, a Board decision taken in the winter or spring still leaves students with the difficult choice either of remaining on a non-prescribed course and taking an individual ARB assessment, or seeking a place on an alternative prescribed course at a different location.

ARB’s procedures ensure that any school whose prescription is withdrawn is given full reasons for the Board’s decision. Furthermore, the procedures allow for institutions to make representations to the Board to enable it to reconsider its decisions in the light of any additional evidence. The process by which institutions can seek such a reconsideration is now underway. In the meantime, as stated above, students should be aware that they have the option of remaining on a non-prescribed course and on completion of their studies, of presenting themselves to ARB for an individual assessment. If successful, they are able to continue their education and training for registration as an architect.
