ARB Hosts Symposium with Stakeholders on Education and Training (30/10/2002)
On 28th October, 2002, the Architects Registration Board (ARB) hosted a symposium, ‘Educating for Practice?’, at the Royal Society of Arts, which explored a number of issues relating to how well current education and training provision geared future architects to the realities of contemporary practice.
Chaired by Amanda Baillieu, the editor of RIBA Journal, the symposium included presentations from authors of recent reports which had raised questions in this area, as well as key academics, practitioners, and recent graduates. Those attending were Heads of Schools, academic and practitioner members of the ARB and RIBA Validation Pools, advisory groups and committees working in the area of education and practice.
It was generally agreed that the research documents discussed indicated that there was a deficiency in the training of architects to practice, which neither the schools nor practices were addressing.
ARB will be taking forward the following issues arising from the symposium:
• The need for further research into the career destinations of students at completion of Parts 1, 2 and 3, and an assessment of the implications of this for ARB’s prescription of qualifications;
• The need for schools of architecture and practices to foster a culture of research and life long learning;
• The specialist nature of much architectural work, and its implications vis-ŕ-vis ARB prescribing a core curriculum.
The Chairman of ARB, Owen Luder, commented:
‘The symposium has raised a number of key issues which ARB will have to address. ARB is very grateful to all those who gave presentations and attended the event.’
