Architects Registration Board Announces Retention Fee for 2004 (26/09/2003)
At its meeting on Thursday 25 September, the Board agreed that the retention fee for 2004 be set at £70.
The Board’s proposed budget for 2004 was published in the Board papers. The increases are broadly in line with inflation except in the case of PCC costs, where recent experience shows that hearings are becoming more costly, and rent for its premises, where there has been no increase for the past 14 years.
The Board has a duty to keep the retention fee to a minimum, whilst maintaining effective professional regulation. It must exercise prudence in the conduct of its affairs and ensure it can meet challenges to its ability both to regulate and protect title for the benefit of the profession and users of architectural services.
The Board’s range of activities required to fulfil these obligations are encompassed within three main areas: maintenance of the Register, the prescription of architectural qualifications which meet rigorous criteria, and the conduct and discipline (including regulating use of the title “architect”) of the profession.
In these ways, the public can be assured that when they employ an architect, they can be confident of his/her skills, knowledge and competence. In the rare circumstances that an architect falls short of these standards, ARB will investigate and take disciplinary action where appropriate.
Notes for Editors
1. ARB’s role and responsibilities are set out in the Architects Act 1997
2. All professions pay for regulation; ARB sets one of the lowest fees amongst other statutory regulators
3. ARB’s work is funded solely by the retention fee, currently £65, which was set in May 2002
