Further Court Success for ARB (18/01/2005)
On 12 January 2005, North Surrey Magistrates found Mr Robert Edward Pearce of Weybridge in Surrey, guilty of breaching Section 20 of the Architects Act 1997.
Mr Pearce did not attend the hearing, but pleaded guilty by post. He was fined £300, and ordered to pay £700 costs.
The matter had been referred to ARB by an architect.
Commenting on the case, ARB’s Regulation Department said:
“ARB is pleased to have secured a further successful prosecution for misuse of title. Use of the title “architect” is protected by law, and a person must be registered with ARB in order to use it in business or practice. ARB will continue to deal firmly with those individuals who, by their actions, deliberately flout the law, and mislead consumers.”

Notes
1. ARB is not responsible for setting the levels of fines or costs; this is a matter entirely for the magistrates.
2. Moneys raised from fines are paid to HM Treasury, not to ARB
