Regulation of Title Initiative (05/07/2005)

During the summer, ARB will be carrying out a benchmarking exercise on how other bodies deal with regulation of title. It is designed to help assess whether ARB is keeping pace with accepted best practice in this important area, and is responding satisfactorily to the expectations both of consumers and the profession.

To complement this initiative, the ARB has also been carrying out a small survey amongst current registrants to gauge present attitudes to the importance of regulated title, and the public protection it affords. The ARB last carried out research in 2001, and the results helped inform current ARB policy on its regulation of title activities.

In 2004/05, the ARB processed approximately 500 alleged title abuse enquiries. It successfully prosecuted 5 offenders in the magistrates’ courts, and obtained formal undertakings from 18 unregistered persons not to use the title ‘architect’ in business or practice.

The outcome of the current research and benchmarking exercise will be considered by the Board at a future meeting to enable it to consider whether its current work in this field can be improved. A summary will be posted on this website on due course.
