Guidelines on registered status

ARB has produced these guidelines for architects who wish to declare their registered status by displaying a statement on their business stationery and/or signage, stating that they are registered with the Architects Registration Board. The concept of demonstrating registered status arose from the findings in ARB's market research exercise in 2001, where many architects expressed a desire actively to promote the registration/regulation of architects to the public. ARB's logo may also be reproduced for business stationery and/or signage, but only if it is used in conjunction with the statement.

These guidelines have been written to assist architects in understanding the requirements. If further information or guidance is required, please contact ARB by one of the following methods:

In adopting this practice, architects are reminded of the requirements in Section 20 of the Act, in particular that where business relating to architecture is carried on, it must be under the supervision of a registered person

NB. Unlawful use of the logo or the statement will be treated as a breach of Section 20 of the Act, and appropriate action taken which can result in a criminal conviction.

Statement

Because ARB registers individuals and not practices, no distinction is drawn between an architect in business or practice or a Limited Liability Partnership. There is, however, a different statement for sole practitioners.

Two options are available; architects are free to choose whichever of the two statements they prefer. There are no restrictions as to where the statement should be positioned, nor to font size and type. It is, however, a requirement that it must be clearly and legibly reproduced in full, with no variation. The statement can be reproduced independently; it does not have to be accompanied by the logo.

Please contact ARB for further guidance if required.

Application to business stationery/signage

For the avoidance of doubt, the ARB logo must not be used

independently, but always in conjunction with one or other of the statements set out overleaf. It must be kept separate from any logo of the firm, and preferably be positioned at the foot of the notepaper. The logo must not be used in such a way as to mislead members of the public or others into thinking that the logo signifies membership of a professional body. ARB is not a professional body, and use of the logo is restricted simply to signalling registered status.

In all instances, the logo must not:

The logo must only be reproduced in black or yellow (pantone colour 102)
